Spatial variables operating within legislative bodies, especially the United States Congress, roll call voting behavior, elections, and congressional districts
Legislative redistricting and gerrymandering

Martis is the 16th WVU professor to win the Carnegie Foundation WV Professor of the Year award
Martis received the 2007 WVU Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award
